Toby Tails Toby Visits Chats du Quercy Fantasy Farm Tales Volume 8 Susan Keefe 9781533675002 Books Reviews
As a true animal lover, I loved the idea of this book—tales of rescues, and celebrating the human-animal bond.
This is a story about Toby the Border Collie, who goes on holiday with his Mum and Dad, to a very special place called Chats du Quercy rescue centre in France, that has helped and saved thousands of cats and kittens.
On his visit, Toby meets special friends Oggie the dog and Billy, Chats du Quercy’s feline mascot, who show Toby around the rescue. With lighthearted humor and heartfelt sincerity, Billy tells it the way it is—or rather the way it should be—when it comes to our understanding and interactions with animals, specifically the cats living at and rehomed by Chats du Quercy.
With a profound message that everyone needs to hear—the more we know about the animals in our world, the better we care for them. Toby learns the tales of several of the cats at Chats du Quercy, once homeless cast-offs that were living on the streets or in the wild; cats that people ignored, or worse, abused. But at some point, fate stepped in and changed the lives of these animals. These are but a few of the stories of the lucky ones, rescued from bad situations and given a place to stay.
The magic of this book is that it has an entertaining, instructional and compassionate message about a rescue known for helping animals with which we live and share this planet. Too many dedicated people give so much of their time and energy to helping cats, dogs and other animals in need, however don’t have enough information to truly maximize their efforts. Chats du Quercy is known for their compassionate care and ensuring they find their forever homes. And what’s even better is that 50% of the profit from every book sold will go to support their work.
If you love to read books about cats and you want to help cats, this book is for you. There are so many cats that need to be rescued. Reading this book may even inspire you to rescue, take action or become involved in a charity like Chats du Quercy.

Toby leaves Fantasy Farms with his human mommy and daddy. He’s off on another grand adventure and his excitement is palpable. Saying goodbye to the cats, Rammy and Cleo, Toby has no idea that he is about to meet many more feline friends.
Arriving at Chats du Quercy, Toby meets Oggie first, a golden brown dog. Oggie introduces him to Billy, a cat whose owners didn’t have the money to look after him. Billy tells Toby how the Chats du Quercy saved his life by adopting him and paying for his medical bills. But Billy wasn’t the only rescue. He tells Toby about the many other cats and kittens that were rescued by Lynn and Ron Stone. Toby was saddened to hear the stories, but very glad that Chats du Quercy exists.
Susan Keefe’s wonderful style of writing is both whimsical and charming. I immediately fell in love with Toby and her whole family. Not only does she spin a wonderful tale for younger children, but also educates them on important matters, like how to care for your furry friends. She explains, very gingerly, what happened to each cat/kitten and the stories are heart-breaking but wonderful all the same. Included in her book are photos of the most adorable cats and kitten that you just want to pick up and cuddle.
Toby’s tails is a book I would recommend for both children, adults, and fellow furry friends who just want to support animal welfare in general.
A book must have a theme and before the author sits to write, they must have already thought about the "moral" of the story. Now, if the book is really good, the book will have not one, but several themes hidden within the text for different readers to find. The book will make children think about certain things while adults questions others. This is that kind of book, and depending on your personal journey, you will be finding different messages that dogs and cats are not exclusive; that we are responsible for our pets; that pets must receive proper medical care to control their offspring... but must importantly, above all, I found a message of compassion and tolerance for our little friends. If you are interested in having your kids learn about respect and responsibility, then this book is a must. It will have some sad stories, but a great and happy ending. As you can see on the cover, part of the income will be used to improve the lives of animals that have little chance of survival. Help them by reading your child a wonderful story. Highly recommended, this is another hit from Susan Keefe. Hope to read much more from her in the next years. (I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review).
